JERRY  JEFF  WALKER

with DJANGO WALKER

Jerry Jeff Walker came to Amarillo to perform at the Amarillo Globe News Center for the Performing Arts last night.

A nice crowd attended, and the concert began shortly after 7:30.

In an unusual move, Jerry Jeff walked out onstage himself to introduce the opening act -
Django Cody Walker, his son.

Django performed 4 or 5 songs, just him and his guitar in the spotlight. He was decent on guitar and had a passable voice, but his songwriting is rather formulaic, and he tends towards songs that are slow and draggy. He is still rather self-conscious on stage. His last song,
College Life, was upbeat and fun if a little predictable.

Next was a few duets with Jerry Jeff and Django performing together. They did one that Django had written,
Texas on My Mind, that was quite good. Pat Green fans may be familiar with it, as he included it on his Three Days Album. He went through a big production of pulling out a sheet of paper with the lyrics and taping them to the mike. Now why didn't he think of that the last time I saw him in 1977? He wouldn't have had to hum Mr. Bojangles.

After an intermission, Jerry Jeff was back, just him in the spotlight, playing guitar & singing without his band. As billed, an intimate performance.

He did some songs I didn't know well, and a few covers, including a very good version of
Trashy Women (Confederate Railroad did this), and Alright Guy (Gary Allan) and a Hugh Prestwood song called The Moon is Still Over Her Shoulder that was slow, and romantic, and all the better for the cracks in JJW's voice. Here's the chorus to this song:

And the moon is still over her shoulder
And the stars are still falling above
And she never gets one minute older
And he is still falling in love

I really liked that one.

Then it was on to the standards. No
Sangris Wine, but most of the others that fans would expect to hear, including Red Neck Mother, Jaded Lover, London Homesick Blues, Mr. Bojangles, and, finally, Desperados Waitin' for a Train. Then a very hasty reprise of Texas on My Mind with Django. Plane to catch and all that.

All in all, a quite enjoyable evening.
