Fiesta Bowl Night  Boise State 0 OU 0
This one had it all.  Great offensive plays, great defensive stands, great comebacks, and trick plays that worked.  For Boise State to win, they had to go 3 for 3 on trick plays.  They did.  It was that kind of night.  As much as this loss hurt, OU has nothing to be ashamed of.  If, as expected, we saw AD for the last time in a Sonner uniform, what a great way to go out - a 25 yard touchdown run that any other night would have broken the heart, if not the backbone, of any other team.  It was just not to be.  I wish Adrian luck in NFL, and hope OU finds the missing piece to play quarterback next year.

Kind of sad, seeing the Heisman presentation without Adrian Peterson there.  And no football game this weekend for the Sooners, either.  It is good to hear that Adrian will be back for the Fiesta Bowl.

7:00 PM  NU 0 OU 0
It’s fantastic to see these two teams meet at the end of the season again.  One of the great traditions in college football returns.  I look for this to be another chapter in a storied rivalry.   The USC loss today should matter to a 1-loss Oklahoma team, but alas, it is not to be.
7:55 2Q  NU 0 OU 14
Wow – what a way to start a game!  Great fumble recovery and beautiful play action pass to get the other 2nd TD.
9:00 Halftime  NU 7 OU 14
Well, it looks like this one will go down to the wire.  There was some very good defense on both sides for the second quarter.  The trick play OU tried to bring out at the end there didn’t work, but I would be surprised if there weren’t a few more tricks before the end of this one.
10:10 4Q  NU 7 OU 21
My nomination for Pontiac game-changing performance:  The 35 yard pass play from the 1/2 yard line on 3rd and 10 1/2 to Jermaine Gresham to kick off an amzing 99 yard TD drive that was a thing of beauty.  Kudos to the defense for allowing no points with the field position Nebraska had.
11:00  Final  NU 7 OU 21
The defense was fabulous.  I can't say enough good things about the job that Rufus Alexander and Nick Harris did today.  Malcolm Kelly may not last more 2 years with the Sooners.  He looked like an NFL Pro-Bowl receiver today with his sure hands and excellent footwork.  Paul Thompson turned in another clutch performance - steady, with flashes of brilliance on that 3rd quarter TD drive.  Adrian Peterson was sorely missed - the running game never got its rhythm today.  But he should be healthy, and well-practiced for the Fiesta Bowl.  Glendale, here we come!
GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!!!!

1:00 PM  Pregame
The door is open.  Texas did lose to A&M, so an OU victory today would send OU to Kansas City to play against Nebraska in the Big XII championship game.  Thankfully, Colt McCoy has a pinched nerve and not a career-ending injury.  I hope he's able to play in a bowl game.  In other news, Gordon Riese, the replay official who missed the illegal touch on the onside kick against Oregon, has said quite a bit more than he has previously said:
Replay official says he knew Oklahoma recovered onside kick vs. Oregon
1:30  Kickoff   OSU 0 OU 0
I do believe OU should come out of this game with another win.  But should and will are different concepts, and OU cannot afford 4 or 5 turnovers this week if they want to be in Kansas City next week.  They've got the talent both offensively and defensively to get the job done.  I hope they do.
2:15  2Q  OSU 7 OU 7
Looks to be a real shootout.  Very close game so far.  So far, so good on no turnovers.
3:00  Halftime  OSU 7 OU 13
The OU defense seems to be asserting control, and OU is having more success n offense.  I'd like to see more variety on 1st down play-calling to open something up for the times they do want to send Patrick off-tackle.  Mostly, I hope the missed PAT doesn't come back to haunt them.
3:55  4Q  OSU 14 OU 27
Opening play of the third quarter went for a touchdown for OU.  The defense has left holes, and OSU is knocking on the door.  This one is no where near settled.
4:55  Final  OSU 21 OU 27
Whew!  The defense was alternately porous and brilliant.  3 goal line stands with OSU starting a series inside the 5, yielding only 1 TD?  Brilliant   Allowing OSU to get inside the 5 3 times?  Arrggghhhh!  End result, Sooners going to KC for the Big XII championship.
GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!!!

11/18  AP#16  BCS#17
11:10  Kickoff  Baylor 0 OU 0
OU has a a lot on the line today, Baylor, with no post-season prospects, not so much.  This is a game that OU should win easily, but just last year, Baylor pushed OU to double OT.  OU needs to show up ready to play tough.
11:52 2Q  Baylor 3 OU 13
What a crazy 1st quarter!  Muffed PAT snap.  Interception with TD runback.  Muffed punt reception.  Holding Baylor to a FG from the 25.  Fantastic reception with potential TD but a costly fumble.  OU is dominating, but has to hold on to the ball.
12:35  Halftime  Baylor 3 OU 13
Another quarter with oddball plays.  The OU defense has been phenomenal.  I hope the Sooners can settle down and hold on to the ball.
1:35  4Q  Baylor 3 OU 36
Again the OU defense was dominant.  But the offense clearly got things done as well.   OU has to solve the turnover problems, though.
2:05  Final  Baylor 10 OU 36
The defense and offensive line are SOLID.  OSU will be a tough game and will capitalize on any turnovers.  The Sooners have to get those under control or the A&M-Texas game won't matter.
GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!!

11/11/06 Postgame
Wow - Texas lost!  That changes everything.  OU is suddenly back in the picture for the Big XII championship game.  They have to win out against Baylor & OSU AND Texas has to lose to A&M, but it could happen.

By the way, if you think there is a problem with the way instant replay is going in NCAA football this year, check out

11/11/06  AP#17  BCS #17

6:05  Kickoff
Tech 0 OU 0
No Adrian Peterson.  No Allen Patrick.  I hope the passing game is better than last week,  OU has some other runners, especially Jacob Gutierrez.
6:40  2Q  Tech 7 OU 3
Note to FSN announcers.  Yes, you would rather have 7 points than 3.  But 3 is better than 0.  You've made your point.  Move on.  Looks to be a real shootout here - last team standing.
7:35  Halftime  Tech 24 OU 17
Turnovers have really made the difference here.  If OU can get a couple and their defense can engineer a few more 3-and-outs, the 2nd half will go better for OU.  That last TD pass to Malcolm Kelly was huge.  OU can make up a 7 point deficit easily if they don't give up the ball, and they come out with the momentum ready to make it happen.
8:30  4Q  Tech 24 OU 20
The OU defense has been playing a lot tougher.  They need to continue to be very stingy in the 4th quarter, and the OU offense needs to avoid mistakes.  They've got the hosses to get the job done.
9:30  Final  Tech 24 OU 34
What a fantasic 4th quarter for the OU defense!  HoldingTech to a FG attempt after the fumble recovery.  Holding on another drive.  They kept Tech SCORELESS!  I hope Manuel Johnson is OK, and I'm also worried about Jacob Gutierrez, who I id not see play in the 2nd half.  Chris Brown did a great job, and I'm looking forward to many good things from him, but if Gute is out that would mean the number 1,2,and 3 running backs were out.

7:00  Kickoff
A&M 0 OU 0
Kyle Field is a tough place for visiting teams.  Tons of tradition there.  I think OU has been making some gains in consistency.  They will need to play well consistently tonight to walk off with a victory.
7:50  2Q  A&M 3 OU 14
Oh.  My.  OU's offensive line has really gelled.  The running game is phenomenal.  I hope this keeps up and the defense gets a little savvier on those option plays.
8:25  Halftime
A&M 10 OU 14
What a strange 2nd quarter.  What a turnaround in officiating.  Seemed like everything went OU's way for the 1st quarter, and all A&M's way the 2nd quarter.  1 personal foul (taunting fo Neil Harris jumping up and straddling the ball carrier) was not unreasonable, but as the announcers said, very inconsistently called.  Then personal foul for a late hit when the back foot was still inbounds, and a pass interference call when the only thing Lindsey Holmes touched was the ball led to the A&M touchdown.  The onside kick call was a gamble, but if it had gone OU's ways would have just about iced the game.  I love the attitude that we can afford to play short field defense.  The penalties were the reason it cost us the touchdown.
9:30  4Q  A&M 10 OU 17
The big story this quarter was the turnovers - one each way.  OU couldn't fully capitalize on their interception, and wound up with a field goal.  A&M got the ball on the OU 33 with a fumble, but backed up nearly 30 yards and had to punt.  3-0 OU for the quarter.
10:30  Final  A&M 16 OU 17
What a nail-biter!  The defense played super tough, never giving up a touchdown this quarter, though A&M came knocking.  That 4th and inches play (actually those 4th and inches plays) was exciting.  The only way it could have been more made-for-Hollywood would have been if OU had not made it the 2nd go-round, and the 12th man for A&M would have cost them the game.  I'm just as glad OU made it, personally.  A huge sigh of relief to have this one in the W column.

11:00 AM  KickOff
MU 0 OU 0
Missouri is a good team and has home field advantage.  OU is without Adrian Peterson.  Could go either way, and I can't argue with those who put feel Missouri should be favored here.  Should be a very good game.

11:55 AM  2Q
MU 3 OU 7
Missouri has made some mistakes and OU has capitalized on them.  OU still hasn't made anything happen on their own.  They will have to before the game is over.

12:35 PM  Halftime
MU 3 OU 16
Again, the key factor here has been Missouri mistakes.  Some (1 fumble, the blocked punt) were forced errors, but all have been costly to Missouri.  Still waiting for OU to get a drive on track without being given great field position.  I have to think they can't count on Missouri mistakes to fuel their offense.

1:30 PM  4Q
MU 10 OU 23
OU's winning the battle at the line of scrimmage both ways, but giving up too much as plays develop.  Looking better, like they're making things happen on their own.  But MU can score quickly, so OU needs to keep adding points, too.

2:20 PM  Final
MU 10 OU 26
OU looked pretty solid here.  The defense has really come together, and the offensive line sure helped make Allen Patrick and Jacob Gutierrez look good.  OU faces another tough road game next week in College Station, but key elements of the team are coming together and settling down and getting it done.

6:00 PM  KickOff
CU 0 OU 0
Colorado is a bit of an enigma coming into today's game.  Are they the doormats that went 0-6 in their first 6 games or the team that beat Texas Tech and nearly beat Georgia?  OU can't count on being one snap away from a TD on any given offensive play without Adrian Peterson.  Could be a very close game!

6:45  2Q
CU 0 OU 10
OU's defense has totally stymied CU's offense, and OU looked very efficient on the opening drive.  Allen Patrick looked like he doesn't want to be remembered as the guy who tried to fill in for AD.  Looks good so far.

7:25  Halftime
CU 0 OU 10
Great defense on both sides.  I hope OU's offense can get back on track.  And that the defense continues to hang tough!

8:20 PM  4Q
CU 0 OU 10
Continuing defensive struggle here, though OU's offense is moving now.

9:05 PM  Final
CU 3 OU 24
The offense did get on track again.  And the defense was awesome!  When two gains of 19 and 22 yards are the only two "big plays" of the game, the defense was getting it done.  I've been critical earlier this year of the "vaunted Oklahoma defense" that seemed unable to live up to expectations before, but I have to give them credit for today's performance (and last week's as well)  They are really coming together.  Missouri will be a tough test, but I really liked the heart Allen Patrick showed, and am optimistic for next year with the determination Chris Brown showed to make the most of the drive he played in.

10/14/06  Postgame

Today's win will, in all likelihood, be the last easy game for the season for the Sooners, as they will face the rest of their schedule without star running back Adrian Peterson.  The rest of the offense will have to step up.  Dropped passes will matter much more than they did today, without Adrian to make up ground.  And the passing game will have the full attention of the defense now.

11:30 AM  KickOff
ISU 0   OU 0
The Sooners are looking to re-establish themselves as a national threat, and there's a bit of extra motivation for Adrian Peterson as his father is able to watch him play for the first time.

12:15 PM  2Q
ISU 7 OU 14
I like the way OU's offense is playing - 2 drives = 2 touchdowns.  The defense got off to a GREAT start, and I hope they can fill in the holes that allowed ISU to score.

1:00 PM  Halftime
ISU 7 OU 24
Saved by the bell!  OU narrowly missed giving up a score and a lot of momentum at the end of the half.  Overall, they're playing well, and after one costly penalty at the beginning avoiding the kind of mistakes that hurt them last week.

1:55 PM  4Q
ISU 9 OU 27
Well, OU outscored ISU 3-2 this quarter.  The defense was solid.  The offense struggled.

2:40 PM  Final
ISU 9 OU 34
One more beautiful AD run to cap things off.  The defense again was solid, but the offense will need to become more efficient against Colorad, Missouri & the Big XII South teams.

3:15 PM  2Q
UT 7 OU 0
Hate to see a quarter end on a fumble like that.  I think both teams are still trying to get established, probing for weaknesses.  OU's been burned several times with naked runner plays, and I hope will not allow any more of those.

4:10 PM  Halftime
UT 7 OU 10
Oklahoma got some things on track, and was more consistent defensively,  If that continues, and they can stop making mistakes (penalties & dropped balls), they'll do well second half.

5:05 PM 4Q
UT 21 OU 10
Well, that  quarter was all Texas.  OU needs to dominate the 4th quarter to come out on top.

5:50 PM  Final
UT 28 OU 10
Unbelievable.  OU still had a chance before another horrible replay call on a incomplete FORWARD pass.  They never stepped up though when they needed to.   One interception was because the defender wanted the ball more than the receiver.  The other was just badly thrown.  But they sure sealed things up for Texas.

Bye week.  It's actually a good time for a bye, and gives the team extra time to prepare for the Longhorns.  The Red River Shootout should be a good game this year.  OU seems to have hit its stride against Middle Tennessee, and UT was shown to be mortal.  I really think the Sooners have a chance on this one!

This game was not  on TV here, so I just caught a few tidbits here and there.  I feel sorry for Middle Tennessee.  It is not their fault that OU was breathing fire this week, and that the defense was taking no prisoners.  I hope that kind of passion lasts another 2 weeks - the Longhorns won't know what hit them

11:10 PM

Well, it looks as if most of the dust has settled.  The Pac 10 has acknowledged that their officials blew it, and have apologized.  That doesn't change anything, and at the end of the season, when the pollsters are determining who goes where, that loss will be just another loss, and the injustice long forgotten.
The Pac-10 can prevent a repeat, though.  They MUST end their requirement that Pac-10 refs officiate at all games hosted at Pac-10 schools.  Bring in a crew from another conference, or have the visiting team's conference send either the on-field or replay crew.  This is what every other conference does.
Until the Pac-10 does this, all other conferences should not schedule future games at Pac-10 schools, and consider withdrawing from any future games already on the schedule.  Oh yeah, and change their rules to insist upon having only their own officials call at any games against Pac-10 schools.
In some of my darker moments, I wonder if there weren't too many errors to be "honest mistakes".  Two things really stand out.  How can one official call that Oregon has the ball when a Sooner has it 5 yards away?  I have heard officials say "There is conclusive evidence" when they overturn a call.  I have never heard them say "There is conclusive evidence" when upholding a call.
Especially if, as later reported, they only had the opportunity to see ONE view of the play - how is watching ONE view conclusive evidence?

OU's offense seems to be on track.  The defense needs to do a better job of stopping the Ducks because I don't think you can count on the Ducks to stop themselves every drive
.
6:26 PM  Final
Oregon 34 OU 33
Get rid of instant replay.  Two glaringly obvious errors - touch by Oregon on the onside kick and tip that should have negated a pass interference call - not overturned
.  Deja vu from the Tech game last year.  The endless reviews really detract from the game and if they do nothing, why have them?  OU blew opportunities they didn't think they needed, and the defense never did effectively stop the Ducks.  But the officials played too big a part in this game.

11:00 PM

I'm pretty nervous about this game.  I don't think OU can make the number of mistakes they've made in the past and come out on top.  Oregon is a better team than either UAB or Washington, it's at their stadium, and they want payback for the Holiday Bowl last year.  Guess we'll see!

Wow!  Mixed bag.  The interception was not a bad decision by Thompson; it was a hit just at the critical moment.  Offense seems to be pretty well balanced.  The defense was great on the second seriies after a catastrophic lapse on the first play.  We need consistency, guys!  Smith is scary on those returns - real fun to watch.

3:57 PM 3Q
UW 13 OU 13
Exciting game.  I've seen some good things happen,  Thompson really took charge in that last drive, and his time management was excellent.  He got plays off quickly.  He picked the wrong receiver and so missed a 1st down where those extra seconds would have mattered.  The defense is doing better, too.  Just not consistent
.
4:12 PM 4Q
UW 13 OU 30
Huge shift of momentum with the exchange of fumbles near the OU goal line.  The UW defense had no answer on that last drive.  I think I'm beginning to see some OU magic and the swagger return
.
6:09 PM Final
UW 20 OU 37
Gutsy comeback attempt at the end by U Wash, but nothing doing.  OU showed some signs of resurgence of the good old days, but they'll have to do so CONSISTENTLY for a whole game to beat Oregon at Oregon next week

I want to know where OU's vaunted defense is.  I haven't been impressed, so far.  The Paul Thompson to Adrian Peterson connection, OTOH, was impressive, and, I hope, the beginning of a beautiful relationship

8/5/06

The day before fall training camp opens is not the ideal time frame to lose your ace quarterback (or the guy who might have been the anchor for a shaky offensive line).  I really don't think Stoops had much choice, but I do have to give him credit for doing the right thing right away rather than trying to sweep it under a rug.  Things have a way of crawling back out bigger badder and nastier than they went in.  I hope the overpayment for outside work is truly an isolated incident of a couple players who thought the rules didn't apply t
o them.  I hope Paul Thompson is ready to step up and take charge.
