| 1/8/08 AP#8 BCS #8 Well, we wound up 2 slots higher than last year, and perhaps better than we deserved. I hope OU can solve the lack-of-consistency problems and get back to form. GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!!!! 1/2/08 AP #3 BCS #3 Late Final OU 28 W Virginia 48 I was SOOOOOO up for this game. Sadly, the Sooners were not. They just looked flat. OU definitely has some work to do to solve some defense issues for next year. GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!!!! 12/2//07 AP #8 BCS #8 Next Day Missouri 17 OU 38 We got to see this one live at the Alamodome. Very exciting, close first half & a very exciting blowout second half. Hotel $100 4 Tickets $200 Chase Daniel pouting on the Jumbotron PRICELESS. On to the Fiesta Bowl! GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!!!! 11/24 AP#10 BCS #10 2:30 Kickoff OSU 0 OU 0 OU got 1 reprieve and was still in the national championship picture, but no longer after last week. They are still in the hunt for the Big XII Championship, but have to take care of business today against Oklahoma State. Tough emotional game. The good news is that Sam Bradford is back in. The bad news is that Tennell, Murray, and Davis are out, and Auston English is not ready to go yet. 3:20 End 1Q OSU 7 OU 14 OU's offense looks great. Bradford looks solid, and the run game game is ON. Not much passing yet, but the pass game has been effective as well. Defense had one great possession (3-and-out) and gave up one TD. Let's hope for more of the former! 4:10 Halftime OSU 10 OU 28 So far OU is 4 for 4 as far as touchdowns to possessions. The offense looks great, and Bradford looked sharp on running for a first down, and smart in getting out of bounds when he did. The defense has been hot and cold. Cold in letting the 'pokes get 1st and goal from the 1; hot in keeping them out of the end zone and red-hot in collecting a fumble & giving the ball to the offense on the 13 instead of the 1. 5:10 End 3Q OSU 17 OU 35 1 punt, 1 interception, 1 touchdown. I hope things are getting back on track offensively. The defense continues to mix brilliance with missed tackles. 6:00 Final OSU 17 OU 49 Very solid game overall. OSU was just trying to get the game over with this quarter, I think. Next, Big XII Championship, opponent TBD. Too bad we're going as the spoiler, rather than as the guys with a shot at the National Championship game. I'm very glad OU is going - I have tickets & am delighted to see the Sooners instead of the Longhorns or Cowpokes. GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!!! 11/18 AP#3 BCS #4 Kickoff OU 0 Texas Tech 0 Important game, with OU in the driver's seat to get to the BCS Championship Game. I would ordinarily have gone to the game, since Lubbock is only 100 miles from Amarillo, but instead was in Katy TX at my niece's wedding. End 1Q OU 7 Texas Tech 13 I missed all of this quarter, but we got occasional updates. If the score wasn't bad enough news, the word that Sam Bradford had gone out with a concussion was even worse. Halftime OU 10 Texas Tech 27 I saw the last minute or so of the 1st half. Not being able to finish the drive with a TD really hurt us, and said volumes about our offense. End 3Q OU 13 Texas Tech 34 There were two defining things this quarter. First, the fake punt attempt on the 1st drive where we lost 8 yards because of some kind of miscue. Second, someone told the defense that Sam Bradford's absence shouldn't affect them, and the last three TT drives of the quarter ended with a failed long FG attempt, a punt after only 15 yards gained, and a 1 play drive ending in an interception. But 3 touchdowns was a lot to make up. Final OU 27 Texas Tech 34 Tough loss. There were some good things that happened. Kevin Wilson finally figured out that the fade route to the left end zone play wasn't working. So we actually scored two touchdowns. The offense did move the ball pretty efficiently when they had four downs per series to go 10 yards. But the potential cost of this game is staggering: Sam Bradford (concussion), DeMarco Murray (knee cap shift), Adron Tennell torn ACL), and Alan Davis (concussion). On to OSU and the Big XII Championship! GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!! 11/10 AP#4 BCS#5 5:30 Kickoff Baylor 0 OU 0 The Ohio State loss raises the stakes. Will it be enough to give OU a window to the BCS Championship game? Are we more likely to face Missouri or Kansas in the Big XII Championship game? All those questions need to be put aside, and Oklahoma needs to focus on Baylor and get the job done tonight. 6:30 End 1Q Baylor 7 OU 14 After a sleepy start, OU got some big plays with an end-zone interception to save a score, and a huge catch by Kelly for a 1 play touchdown drive. The defense nneds to make sure that Whitaker for Baylor is neutralized. 7:15 Halftime Baylor 14 OU 28 What a wild finish to the 2nd half. A failed 4th down conversion for the Sooners leading to a 75 yard Baylor TD on the 1st play from scrimmage. But wait. . . there's more! DeMarco Murray took a bouncing kickoff at the 9 yard line back to the 3 and was in the grasp of a Baylor player, only to escape, pick up a couple blockers, and run it back for the distance. Some huge momentum shifts there! 8:15 End 3Q Baylor 21 OU 42 Two beautiful touchdown pass plays to Manuel Johnson highlighted this quarter. Bradford is making good things happen in the air tonight. It seems they're keeping his running skills under wraps tonight. I wonder if we'll see more of that next week against Tech? 9:10 Final Baylor 21 OU 52 Give this quarter to the defense. No scores for Baylor. YAY! The offense started looking sloppy, though, when a drive starting on the Baylor 15 led to a Baylor interception, and another drive stalling at the 11 for a field goal. A win is a win, and this one was convincing, but I think Tech will push us a bit more and capitalize on any mistakes. GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!! 11/4 AP, USA Today, & Harris all have OU at #4. BCS has OU at #5, with Kansas ahead of us. If we win out, we'll have dealt with Kansas, and have to hope to leapfrog 2 of the three teams ahead of us. 11/3 AP#5 BCS #6 7:00 Kickoff Texas A&M 0 OU 0 This is a must-win game for Texas A&M to remain incontention for the Big XII South title. I expect them to play tough. But I don't think they have the players to get the job done against Oklahoma. I don't know that OU will beat the 21 point spread, but I think they'll win. 7:55 End 1Q Texas A&M 0 OU 7 Turnovers have proven costly to the Aggies. They shut down Oklahoma's offense 3-and-out on the first possession, but then muffed the punt, and gave OU the ball back, and OU quickly took advantage of the gift and scored. It looks like OU's offense is really clicking. 8:45 Halftime Texas A&M 0 OU 21 OU continues to dominate. One questionable play went OU's way on replay. It was a case where the replay could not provide indisputable evidence with which to overturn the play, so it was the call on the field that determined the outcome there. I wonder what's up with the punting game. OU has not had any really solid punts. I know Mike Knall kicked at least two of them I wonder where Cohen was? 10:00 End 3Q Texas A&M 0 OU 35 More domination from OU. Gresham is golden today, but everyone is having a good night. I hope Auston English is not too seriously injured. 10:45 Final Texas A&M 14 OU 42 Looks like OU got up for this one. And after seeing Iowa State demolish Kansas State, maybe they're not such a bad team after all. Or maybe K-State isn't as good as it seemed for a while. It looks like the Big XII races have become clearer. Kansas & Missouri control their destinies in the North; Oklahoma & OSU control their destinies. OU, of course has to win out. But a win against an undefeated Kansas in the Big XII championship would go a long way to improve OU's computer ranking and strength of schedule. GO SOONERS!!!!!!!! 10/28 Bye weeks shouldn't hurt you. But they do. OU is now #5 in the AP & USA Polls. They remain #4 in the Harris Poll, & are stable at #6 in the BCS rankings. Quick, don't look - what conference is the only one with 3 top 10 teams? If you guessed Big XII, you've been paying attention. Yay, Big XII! 10/27 AP#4 BCS#6 Bye Week No help from upsets this week. All teams ranked ahead of OU won this week. I guess I've gotten spoiled & used to other teams helping us out. Kansas is looking more and more like the real deal. I do hope they win out for the rest of the regular Big XII season, but that OU beats them in the Big XII championship game. In past years, that's been a bit of a trap game, where OU has had little to gain and much to lose in that game. First things first, OU has to take care of business & put away A&M, Baylor, Tech, and OSU. 12/21 Oklahoma is #4 in the AP. USA Today, and Harris Polls. BCS drops us to #6 behind Oregon and Arizona State. At least one of them will lose. 10/20 AP#4 BCS#5 11:30 Kickoff OU 0 Iowa State 0 Sooners are a long way from home in this game. They should win easily, but this year, that doesn't seem to mean much. I hope they're ready for a tough game. 12:20 End 1Q OU 0 Iowa State 7 They say that football is a game of inches. About 6 inches combined to keep OU from having 14 points at this point. Bradford's just that little bit off, underthrowing Kelly and overthrowing Iglesias. I hope he's got his sights adjested for some strikes. Oh, yeah, and that we hold on to the fottball, too. ISU's offense is capable of taking what we give them, but not sustaining a drive on its own, it would appear. 1:05 Halftime OU 0 Iowa Sate 7 A couple more missed opportunities. But the defense is starting to come together for some great drive-ending stops. I'm still certain enough that OU will win this one to wince at the airplay this score must be getting elsewhere... 2:15 End 3Q OU 7 Iowa State 7 Well, the scoring drive certainly looked like Oklahoma was dominating the way it should be. I hope the Sooners are on the verge of breaking out. 3:05 Final OU 17 Iowa State 7 A win. I'll take it. Wasn't pretty, and I think we may lose some style points, but a win is all this will ultimately count for. One week at a time, one win at a time. I'm glad Hartley got it together. His 5 points were critical. GO SOONERS!!!!!!! 10/14 OU #4 in the AP poll, USA Today Poll, and Harris Poll. They're #5 in the BCS Poll. 10/13 AP#6 5:30 Kickoff Missouri 0 OU 0 This is Oklahoma's last game against a currently ranked opponent, and "the game" to watch this weekend. I hope OU is ready to make a case for being in the hunt for the national championship, and keep control of the Big XII South in their hands. 6:20 End 1Q Missouri 7 OU 10 Well, so far, OU has been able to sustain a great drive to score a touchdown, while Missouri needed an OU mistake to get the ball into the endzone. Bradford has looked sharp, and I'm glad to see Malcolm Kelly as the primary target. I do believe the man has spidey-web coming out of his wrists to haul that ball in! 7:10 Halftime Missouri 10 OU 17 Again, I think OU dominated most of the game, although I hated to see them give up the big pass play and field goal to end the half. 8:25 End 3Q Missouri 24 OU 23 That's twice Iglesias has lost the ball and twice Missouri has capitalized on it. I still think OU is winning at the line and on field position, and can sustain drives to score better than Missouri, but cheap points count just as much as hard-earned points. I hope the missed PAT doesn't matter in the end! 9:15 Final Missouri 31 OU 41 Whew. Um, OU coaches? Tonight you could afford to make 1 PAT miss cost 4 points total. I think the special team play needs some work, and we need some better plays for 2 point conversions. Fortunately, we got away with some on-field and strategic errors. Even though all three reviewed plays went against Oklahoma, the two reversals and one confirmation were good calls. I need to say that, since I'm not shy about pointing it out when the replay guys get it wrong. GO SOONERS!!!!!! 10/7 OU #6 in the AP Poll, #5(tie) in the USA Today Poll. 10/6 AP #10 2:25 Kickoff OU 0 Texas 0 Well, this game was supposed to be to see which of these two teams would be likely to figure in the National Championship picture. Of course, one thing last weekend showed us was that on any given weekend, anything can happen, and you have to take things one game at a time. So now, this game may actually mean more to both teams as one will emerge with a good shot at the getting into the Big XII Championship game, a BCS Bowl, and, just maybe, back into the hunt for the National Championship. The other team will be playing out the season for pride. For the 102nd time, it's game time for Oklahoma & Texas! 3:30 End 1Q OU 7 Texas 0 WooHoo! Sam Bradford and his receivers are clicking today. There have been some great catches today, and Bradford seem to have gotten his confidence back in throwing deep. The throw to Kelly was terrific, and especially good to see after last week, when Kelly was never a target. 4:10 Halftime OU 14 Texas 14 This one's going to be a nail biter! The offense is mixing up plays a little better today, with some play-action. The defense is getting some great plays but letting McCoy complete too many 15 yarders for 1st downs. 5:20 End 3Q OU 21 Texas 14 The fumble Curtis Lofton caused, and Gerald McCoy recovered, proved key. It stopped an almost certain Texas score, and shifted momentum back for the Sooners. DeMarco Murray's touchdown run was beautiful. 6:10 Final OU 28 Texas 21 I can breathe again now. That was a thriller, one of the best Red River Shootouts in years. One the Sooners really needed to win to get back on track, and one they earned with extra effort. This was one of those games where both teams deserved to win, but only one could. I'm glad it was OU. GO SOONERS!!!!! 9/30 OU #10 in both AP and USA Today Polls. About right. 9/29 AP#3 12:25 Kickofff OU 0 Colorado 0 1st game of conference play. Colorado is a tough place to play. I have to believe Stoops won't let them look past this game to next week. 1:15 End 1Q OU 7 Colorado 0 OU is not dominating this game. I was glad too see we could get over 10 yards to score, but when you only had to go 11, it's not a sign that you can move the ball at will. If I were scoring this on style points, I'm afraid Colorado would have the edge. 2:00 Halftime OU 17 Colorado 7 Well, that one drive looked like Sooner magic was back 80 yards in 3 plays felt good. We need to do that about 4 more times. And our defense needs to not relax on 3rd downs. Seems like an awful lot of series we hold them tough, get 3rd and long, and let them convert. 3:15 End 3Q OU 24 Colorado 10 I hope 2 touchdowns are enough to win this game, but I'm not feeling confident here. Bradford seems to have lost some confidence with some dropped passes early in the game, and the tipped ball interdeption. 4:10 Final OU 24 Colorado 27 Unbelievable. Replays are supposed let stand calls on the field unless there is indisputable visual evidence to reverse the call. The two officials on the field both signalled catch, quickly and decisively, and the umpire was perfectly positioned to see it. Of the video replays I saw, there was nothing that showed the ball hitting the field. And yet... the replay official reversed the field call. Oklahoma should have had this game so far out of reach that a failed drive heavily affected by a replay call should not have mattered. But the offense was not clicking today. Even if OU would have gotten that first down, I can't say I have any confidence we'd have been able to score. OTOH, we could have run more plays, used more time, and if Colorado did get it back, make them go more yards in less time to try for the field goal. GO SOONERS!!!! 9/22 OU #3 in the AP, and #4 in the USA Today Poll. 9/21/07 AP#4 10:45 Final OU 62 Tulsa 21 GO SOONERS!!!! 9/15/07 AP #3 5:41 Final Utah State 3 OU 54 GO SOONERS!!! 9/8/07 AP #5 3:30 Final Miami 13 OU 51 GO SOONERS !! 9/1/07 AP #8 9:50 Final North Texas 10 OU 79 GO SOONERS! 1/8 AP#11 Final Poll |

7:00 Kickoff OU 0 Tulsa 0 The turnpike series. In-state rivally. Nice for spice, but the main ingredients here are two of the nations most talented offenses on the field tonight. It will be interesting to see who has the ball the most. Time of possession can be a misleading statistic if a team only needs a handful of plays to score. Let the game begin! 7:50 End 1Q 14 Tulsa 7 Interesting game so far. I think OU has been dominant, but has made more mistakes, and has paid for them. Bradford is starting to look more assured out there, and it looks like our OL is dominating the line of scrimmage. But their offense is doing a good job in confusing the secondary - both Tulsa scores came with Lendy Holmes geting beat. 8:45 Halftime OU 35 Tulsa 14 Things are looking up. It looks like OU has made some adjustments and is doing better at containing Pual Smith & the Tulsa offense, and the Tulsa defense is looking a bit shell-shocked. 10:00 End 3Q OU 42 Tulsa 21 OU only had one drive this quarter, but didn't score on it. Hartley missed on a FG attempt. He seems to be a lot less confident this year than last. I hope he gets rid of the jitters before we play Texas; we may need those points. DeMarco Murray's 81 yd kickoff return was electrifying; a thing of beauty. 10:45 Final OU 62 Tulsa 21 We did shut out Tulsa this quarter; Halzle and Nichol each came on for a series or two, and looked quite capable, So now we get to see where we stand within the Big XII. Should be interesting! GO SOONERS!!!! 9/21 Post-Game About the ESPN2 "announcers" - here is what I wrote to ESPN about their crew: I should have known it was going to be bad when OU's first drive was derailed by a 15 yard personal foul penalty. Did we ever get to see what the penalty was? Who it was on? Anything? No! Several times the cameras were on the announcers instead of the play. The replay of Malcom Kelly's out-of-bounds TD reception didn't show his feet! All we got to see was from the hips up. If play-by-play is beyond your guys abilities, silence is preferable to 15' talk about Notre Dame. Really. Try it. What an insult to two quite good teams on the field to talk about a whole bunch of other teams, especially a loser team like Notre Dame. OU will be on national TV plenty, but I really feel badly for Tulsa fans watching that game. Their guys played their hearts out, and left it all on the field, but the self-important "announcers" can't tell the difference between play-by-play and instructions to fill up 20 minutes with fluff. 9/16/07 New polls out. OU #4 in both AP & USA Today polls. 9/15/07 AP #3 2:30 Kickoff Utah State 0 OU 0 I hope Bob Stoops is creative in coming with reasons to take Utah State seriously. I can't even watch the game since it's only on PPV. Thanks to KKGM out of DFW for the streaming braodcast. 3:20 End 1Q Utah State 0 OU 14 It's been all OU so far. Bradford has 2 TDs and 0 incompletes so far. I'd like to see a little more rushing, but that's just being greedy, I suppose. 4:07 Halftime Utah State 3 OU 38 Real nice rushing TD by Allen Patrick for the 4th touchdown. No complacency in view so far. About the right amount of penalties to show that players are going all out. 5:10 End 3Q Utah State 3 OU 54 Nice run by DeMarco Murray for 92 yards. The announcers said it was the 3rd longest rushing TD in Sooner history. Given the long rushing history of the Sooners, I'm surprised by that. Another touchdown contributed by the defensive squad with an interception runback by Curtis Lofton. I think that one each in three games for defensive scores. 5:41 Final Utah State 3 OU 54 Good to see some of the other players get some playtime. It wouldn't have hurt my feelings if they'd let Madu try to score, but I think he'll get his day, too. GO SOONERS!!! 9/14/07 That *poof* you just heard was OU's strength of schedule taking a big hit. Thanks, Cowpokes. 9/9/07 AP Poll out - OU #3. Coaches Poll out - OU #5. 9/8/07 AP #5 11:00 Kickoff Miami 0 OU 0 OU is adding two potent runnings backs in Allen Patrick and Chris Brown to the team that demolished North Texas last week. But Miami is not North Texas. The current players were toddlers or not even born during the three years OU went 33-3 in the mid 1980s and all three losses were to... Miami. Sometimes a program just seems to have another program's number. Oklahoma had Nebaska and Florida State's numbers. Miami had ours. Let's see if time changes things. End 1Q Miami 3 OU 14 Wow. Just wow. OU has its game ON. If Kelly keeps playing like this, this may be his last year at Oklahoma. He's awesome. And OU's defense is playing very very tough this week, very stingy. 12:30 Halftime Miami 10 OU 21 Miami sure looked like a different team with Kyle Wright connecting on all those 10-13 yard passes for 3rd downs. But then the defense did an amazing job of shutting them down, even after the fake field goal attempt gave Miami 1st and goal at the 2. It took the Hurricanes 7 plays and TWO defensive pass interference calls to finally get the ball across the goal line. The announcers made a big deal about what a huge momentum shift that touchdown caused, but I don't think so. The drive that got them there, yes. The red zone performance, no. End 3Q Miami 13 OU 31 Looks like I was right about the momentum. OU made adjustments, and the defense rocked once again. I am really liking Bradford more and more. He is playing very well, making good decisions, throwing quite accurately and to spots where interceptions are unlikely. More than that, though, he seems to have much better vision and command of the field than I would expect from a freshman quarterback. I thnk we have the real deal in him. 3:30 Final Miami 13 OU 51 About the worst thing to happen here was that Hartley missed an extra point attempt. Halzle showed some good stuff, connecting with Tennell for a long touchdown. It really looked like Miami had pretty well given up; they were 3 and out for three drives; Oklahoma was 3 touchdowns for their 3 drives. GO SOONERS !! 9/1/07 AP #8 6:00 Kickoff North Texas 0 OU 0 So Sam Bradford is the starting quarterback. TWO Sooners are in trouble - RB Chris Brown has a one-game suspension for an internal matter; WR Ryan Broyles has a 1 game suspension and the aftermath of an early Friday morning arrest for stealing gas from a convenience store. Lots of potential, quite a few questions. Todd Dodge is not one to take lightly, but if OU has its act together, it should be a blowout. 7:00 End 1Q North Texas 0 OU 21 OK, I think things are going OU's way. What a great group of receivers they've developed, and Bradford seems to have the skill for making the receivers look good. W00t! Demarco Murray has also been fun to watch. 8:00 Halftime North Texas 0 OU 49 Not quite half a hundred, but it feels soooo good to see OU living up to expectations. They are really solid on offense, and I think the 0 says the defense has it together as well. 9:00 End 3Q North Texas 3 OU 63 No shutout. Halzle looks pretty good, too. I wonder if they're thinking about red-shirting Nichol this year. Bradford looked awfully good earlier. I'm impressed with Mossis Madu - I hadn't heard much about him before, but he is slippery. 9:50 Final North Texas 10 OU 79 So Garrett Hartley tied Trey DeCarlo's mark of 11 PATs. That's pretty cool, although UNT is not Texas A&M... Fun game to watch. It's funny, but it seems like the offense really got to shoecase their talent and depth, while the defense quickly got the job done and yielded the stage back to the offense. I'm glad they got the safety at the end. I believe we may have just seen the beginning of a terrific season. Next week will tell us more. GO SOONERS! 8/30/07 Perhaps the NCAA has a heart after all! The NCAA has issued a waiver in favor of Oklahoma in this case. The University, but not boosters, can collect monies for the funeral expenses, as long as certain stipulations are followed to keep everything above board. 8/28/07 Piling On Maybe the NCAA really is, as Brian Bosworth once claimed, the National Communists Against Athletes. Sooner fans who want to contribute to a fund for the Mitchell family are being told they cannot do so. Why not? Because Herman had a 10th grade brother who also plays HS football, and any contribution to the family would be an NCAA violation, and put OU at risk for very serious NCAA sanctions. Something is very very wrong here. 8/25/07 Sad News Herman Mitchell, a Houston HS senior wide receiver, who had verbally commited to Oklahoma, was shot and killed in his apartment parking lot yesterday. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and teammates. 8/24/07 AP #8 There is something magical about a new season, a blank piece of paper with much yet to be written. There is reason to hope for everything, and reason to be cautious in one's expectations. There are quite a few questions to be answered, and many of those answers will be revealed by this time next week. 7/11/07 Can anyone with a lick of sense throw in a yellow flag and call the NCAA for Unsportsmanlike Conduct for piling on? Vacating the 2005 wins is meaningless, except to Stoops' and program stats. Not to mention that it's punishing the football team for the sins of the former basketball coach. I mean would lack of institutional control/failure to monitor even have been on the board without Kelvin Sampson? IMO, the 2005 forfeiture is petty, vindictive, and just one more reason why the NCAA is going to find itself obsolete when colleges decide enough is enough and form another sanctioning body that understands college athletics. 1/8 AP#11 Final Poll |
